Mississauga 10K Race Recap

I have now officially ran my second 10K race.

Yesterday I ran the 10K Desjardin race that is part of the Mississauga Marathon weekend. It was along the waterfront in Port Credit and the scenery was truly beautiful but I could not completely enjoy it because I was running too fast ....LOL

So the parking and traffic was INSANE. DH dropped me off and I walked down to the waterfront and he went to find parking at the finish line. So I got down there at 6:00pm, the race was suppose to start at 6:30pm (note how I said "was suppose to start"). So I got into the corral and waited, and waited! Luckily I had a throw away jacket to keep me a bit warm but my legs were cold. It was quite cold and windy down by the waterfront and there was no sun and very cloudy, it seriously looked like it was going to rain, but luckily it didn't. I am having bad luck with my races and weather!

Before I continue here is a cute picture of myself and my best cheerleader at home before leaving for the race. Isn't that the cutest sign ever!

So 6:30pm came and we were not running yet. Apparently there were 3 shuttle buses filled with 10K runners that were still trying to make it through traffic. Which honestly alot of people were not happy with. They should have known the traffic was crazy, there were actually 3 sets of runners (2 races) there. There was a 5K that left at 6pm, and then there was my 10K that was mixed with a 10K relay student race and not to mention there was construction happening on the main road. So we all waited in the cold!
Okay finally we started....woohoo!
I started really good but at the 2K I was feeling sluggish....I did not like such a late start to a race. Running at 6:30pm is not for me....I would rather get up early and run when I am well rested and fresh, so I think that had alot to do with my sluggish feeling. I perked up a bit at the water station at 3K and I also had a Clif Shot Blok at around 5K but I think I lost some time between 2K-3K! The course also looped back within the first 5K which I felt was very distracting.
So I hit 9K and I tried to give it all I had and I was looking for my cheerleader with the yellow sign. I saw her and hubby and my parents right before the finish line and I finished hard. Here I am passing them:

Okay so here are my results:
Official time - 52:39 - only 3 mins faster than my first 10K
Chip Time - 52:30 - exactly the same as my first 10K - atleast I am consistant
Official Rank (out of 1674 runners) - 279th
Womens Rank (out of 986) - 63rd
Age/Sex Category Rank (out of 153) - 4th - Seriously I am so EXCITED about this stat....WOOHOO
So I am disappointed that I did not have a better time but again atleast I am consistant but I am super excited about the category stat.

Here is a pic of me and my cheerleader at the finish area:

My daughter loves the medals....LOL

Thanks for reading my length race recap. So my next race is another 10K that starts at 7:30pm. Okay I need everyone advice on running late races. What do you do all day? What do you eat during the day? How do you mentally prepare yourself for a late race? That is what I need to work on because I am dying for a sub 50!

  5. Good race. A lot of credit for running late in the day. I have no advice for late races - I just won't do them. I'm a morning runner all the way. If a race starts at 10 am, I'm thinking that is a bit too late for me.

  6. Great Race!!!! 4th out of 153 is an excellent showing... it seems to indicate that your relative performance was better than your previous 10k even if your time didn't reflect it...

As for preparing for the 7:30 pm I would suggest training in the evening (assuming this is at all possible for your schedule) whenever possible for a couple weeks before the race... I think you probably felt sluggish not because you did anything wrong prerace but because your body was just not accustomed it and wasn't quite sure how to respond.

  7. Great job--nice placement! And your daughter is super cute. As to running races in the p.m.--that's tough. In fact, I don't think I've ever done it. I would guess eating lighter in the afternoon would be key, but since I haven't done it, I'll stop there!
